I’ve been using unity (16.04) for a while and really want a tiling window manager but every WM I try is so minimalist. E.g. they have nothing like the launcher (I don’t want a dock…), global application menu, missing wifi/battery/audio/volume options in the top bar, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what combination of Desktop Environment/Window Manager I’m looking for?

  • You can install any applet or menu bar on almost any wm. e.g. github.com/jaagr/polybar

  • The real deal breaker is the lack of global application menu (where you can type to search through all the drop down menus quickly)

  • Rofi can provide the application menu (launcher).

  • dwm comes with dmenu for launching applications without needing to open a terminal; dmenu also works with other WMs
