Do not do that. Python is used also for some system utilities. You will overwrite python and you never know what some utilities will fail. — So, just install python locally for your user (and possibly with pip / pyenv) so that you can have parallel version of python, according the specific uses.

  • It doesn’t sound like OP is trying to replace the stock Python, but rather to actually use it by default rather than the one installed in ~summer. That said, please clarify whether pythoon is a typo or not.

Is there some default password for a new user in Linux?

I am a Windows user gradually moving towards Linux. In Windows we have an option of either having or not having some password for a user. Once we do not put a password we can directly log in to the system.

However, in Linux this is not possible as every user must have a password. Even if one does not give a password not typing anything and simply pressing the Return key doesn’t log one in (unlike Windows). Is there some default password set for every user or any other mechanism by means of which a password is always assigned?

Authentication can be handled in many different ways in Linux. Password authentication via /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow is the usual default. There is no default password.

A user is not required to have a password. In a typical setup a user without a password will be unable to authenticate with the use of a password. This is common for system users which are used to run daemons, but are not intended to be used directly by a human.

You can configure Linux to allow login to the desktop automatically, or allow login without a password. Authentication is done via PAM, which is highly configurable. The Arch wiki offers the following PAM configuration for login without a password:

If you want to bypass the password prompt in GDM then simply add the
following line on the first line of /etc/pam.d/gdm-password:

auth sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup nopasswdlogin

Then, add the group nopasswdlogin to your system. See Groups for
group descriptions and group management commands. Now, add your
user to the nopasswdlogin group and you will only have to click
on your username to login.

No, there is not. For every single user you create in the GUI you have to set manually the password. Blank passwords or default standard password are obviously considered as a high security risk.

    But

You have the command newusers witch can help you create one or many users using the default password you want in plain text mode.
usage as root : newusers file where file is a text file with the folowing structure for each line :
    pw_name:pw_passwd:pw_uid:pw_gid:pw_gecos:pw_dir:pw_shell

You can do it also in one command line. Example :

    echo chinmay:clearpassword::::/home/maleki:/bin/bash | sudo newusers

To answer the literal question: no, there is no default password. Usually by default an account will have an “invalid” password, that is, a password hash that will not be matched by any password at all. In order to be able to log in, a password must be explicitly specified, e.g. by running passwd for the account in question.

However, you can configure the logon manager to automatically log in as a specific user, either immediately or after a delay, if you wish to do so. That is not normally done, but the feature exists.

No, there isn’t a default password for users. The information you might want to read is the manual page for adduser

        man adduser

This command uses useradd which is a lower level command.

        share|improve this answer

        • 1

That depends on the distro. In Debian adduser is it’s own command. In RHEL, it’s a symlink to useradd.

There is no default password: either an account has a password, or it doesn’t (in which case you can’t log in, at least not with password authentication). However, you can set an empty password. Many services reject empty passwords, though. In particular, with an empty password, you won’t be able to log in remotely. But you will be able to log in on the console.

Rather than use this feature, I recommend setting a reasonably strong password, and if you really don’t want to have to type it because your computer stays at home and nobody but you accesses it, set up autologin. A passwordless account does make sense in some cases, such as children.

                  pw_name:pw_passwd:pw_uid:pw_gid:pw_gecos:pw_dir:pw_shell

You can do it also in one command line. Example :

                  echo chinmay:clearpassword::::/home/maleki:/bin/bash | sudo newusers

No, there is not. For every single user you create in the GUI you have to set manually the password. Blank passwords or default standard password are obviously considered as a high security risk.

This command uses useradd which is a lower level command.

Hello I’m running Kali Linux on VirtualBox. I’m attempting to run a Bridged Adapter connection. Relevant details:

(In VM) Name: Kali Operating System: Ubuntu (64-bit)

Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop, (Bridged Adapter, Microsoft Network Adapter, Multiplexor Driver)

(Host machine) Host Machine (Windows 10) Wireless adapter: Intel (R) Dual Band Wireless AC-3165

I’m following a tutorial as well as tinkering around after reading various tutorials online. What I have done so far:

                                          • Selected ‘Bridged Adapter’ from the dropdown in network settings in VM
                                          • Selected ‘Allow VMs’ from ‘Promiscuous Mode:’ in VM settings.
                                          • Checked ‘Cable Connected’ in VM settings.
                                          • Created a bridge in Windows network settings between my Windows Wireless adapter and the VM adapter. It has created ‘Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver’ in Windows Network Settings.
                                          • I’ve selected Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Driver in network settings in VM.
                                          • In Kali I have changed managed=false to managed=true in NetworkManager.conf as per instructions in tutorial.

And according to various sources it should be as simple as that. When I ping a well known domain to test, it hangs for a few seconds and I get ‘Name or service not known’. I’ve been messing around with this for some time with no success. Does anyone have any ideas. Any help much appreciated.

                                                  Why I see This?

You see this error when resolvconf file is altered or overwritten because this file is used to configure Dns server,
I faced same problem and after banging my head for 1 week I found this as you can see that I was getting that “Name or service not known error

                                                  SOlution

                                                  sudo apt-get purge resolvconf

                                                  you should see this

                                                  enter image description here

                                                  Finally

after running this command you need to restart your machine.

                                                            1. Start computer

                                                            3. Run startx with the following xinitrc.
                                                            4. Use dwm.

Will there be any problem if I use my computer without gdm, only with xinit like that?

                                                            The xinitrc is as follows:

                                                            #!/bin/sh

All “save and restore” answers I’ve seen list the dpkg --get-selections > package.list command but that doesn’t include the version for each packages.

To solve this, there are two possible approaches:

                                                                            • upgrade debsigs to 0.1.18 or later (which is widely available, albeit not in Ubuntu Precise or Trusty, which is presumably what you’re using);
                                                                            • force dpkg-deb to compress using gzip, by adding -Zgzip to the dpkg-deb command.
                                                                            share|improve this answer

                                                                              • force dpkg-deb to compress using gzip, by adding -Zgzip to the dpkg-deb command.

This works if I manually edit .bashrc:

                                                                                      export PROMPT_COMMAND='trap "" 1 2 15; history -a >(tee -a ~/.bash_history | while read line; do if [[ $line =~ ^#[0-9]*$ ]]; then continue; fi; logger -p local3.debug -t "bash[$$]" "($USER $SSH_CONNECTION) $line"; done); trap 1 2 15;'

Adding awk '{print $1}' causes problems, I suspect because of quotes.

                                                                                      This doesn’t work:

                                                                                      export PROMPT_COMMAND='trap "" 1 2 15; history -a >(tee -a ~/.bash_history | while read line; do if [[ $line =~ ^#[0-9]*$ ]]; then continue; fi; logger -p local3.debug -t "bash[$$]" "($USER) $(echo $SSH_CONNECTION | awk '{print $1}') $line"; done); trap 1 2 15;'

Attempting to wrap these quotes in the echo 'export PROMPT_COMMAND=....'' >> ~/.bashrc is also giving me a headache.

Any suggestions on both of these issues?

Unfortunately ended up breaking bashrc and temporarily locking myself out of the VM. The single line command seemed easier.

                                                                                      • Well, in that case, don’t put single quotes inside a single quoted string (see the awk bit). Doing it as a function would allow you to write readable code that doesn’t have to use quoting tricks. It would also allow you to test it outside of PROMPT_COMMAND before even setting that variable.

Attempting to enable logging of bash commands to syslog, including the ip of the logged in ssh user. The end goal is to have a script which will echo 'export PROMPT_COMMAND=....'' >> ~/.bashrc

Doing it as a function would allow you to write readable code that doesn’t have to use quoting tricks. It would also allow you to test it outside of PROMPT_COMMAND before even setting that variable.

I don’t have internet access on my VM so I move files instead of wget.

So I move the file libnfc-1.7.0.tar.bz2 to my Ubuntu. After that tar xvjf libnfc-1.7.1.tar.bz2 and cd libnfc-1.7.1 – all fine.

I don’t have internet access on my VM so I move files instead of wget.

So I move the file libnfc-1.7.0.tar.bz2 to my Ubuntu. After that tar xvjf libnfc-1.7.1.tar.bz2 and cd libnfc-1.7.1 – all fine.

                                                                                        But when I do ./configure --prefix=/usr I got this:

I don’t have internet access on my VM so I move files instead of wget.

So I move the file libnfc-1.7.0.tar.bz2 to my Ubuntu. After that tar xvjf libnfc-1.7.1.tar.bz2 and cd libnfc-1.7.1 – all fine.

I try to install https://github.com/episage/SharpNFC/ , according to readme file.

So, if a package called libusb contains the run-time libraries for libusb, then libusb-dev will contain the development headers.
